Sing a New Song
This sight reading book incorporates a rhythmic approach to music, reading, learning, and comprehension for singers. It focuses on specific rhythmic figure in each lesson, with exercises and short songs presented to reinforce the learning.
The first section of the book starts with basic "on the beat" rhythms. The second section introduces contemporary rhythms derived from jazz, popular, and gospel employing syncopation. Melodic examples in each lesson range from humorous or inspirational to creative or familiar tunes and lyrics.
Choirs like bands can develop their skills in sight reading music. Choirs do not have, however, the advantage of reading music as do band members for the reason that instrumentalist push valves and keys to assist in producing tones. Vocalists must rely on their vision and vocal chords in interpreting and producing intervals between notes. To this they must add, as do instrumentalists, various rhythm patterns which in turn make up a song.
